Neighbors worry new construction will add more traffic to already busy area

Neighbors fear 1,000 new housing units near Phipps Plaza in Buckhead could create even more traffic congestion in the already populated area.

The North Buckhead Civic Association pressed the Buckhead CID to commission a study for this area and to help develop solutions.

"The traffic is already bad at this intersection and with the addition of thousand apartments, it is bound to be worse," said Gordon Certain, president of the North Buckhead Civil Association.

The study will look at several intersections near Peachtree Road and Wieuca Road.

"What we are hoping to get out of a study is an appreciation for the lack of coordination that exists for the various intersections," said Robert Sarkissian, the traffic chair for the North Buckhead Civic Association.

"We need to find out what changes need to be made to the intersection s so that traffic flows," Certain said.

"We need to use better technology, better signaling, synchronization with the other intersections. I believe that is doable without a huge cost," said Sarkissian.

Community leaders hope the study will help the community find solutions to the constant traffic problems.

Shoppers say wait times can be up to 45 minutes to move less than a mile in the heavily populated area.
