Neighbors report seeing man on fire as he ran from burning home

ATLANTA — Neighbors reported seeing a man on fire as he ran from a mobile home blaze in southwest Atlanta Saturday afternoon.

Channel 2's Richard Elliot was at Grady Memorial Hospital, where paramedics rushed the man after he collapsed on the street.

Charred rubble is all that remains of the home, which is wedged against a 15-foot-high barrier wall for I-85 by Metropolitan Parkway.

Earlier Saturday, Elliot spoke to Sykeria Mayes, who lives right across the street and saw everything happen.

"He wasn't wearing a shirt and his body was on fire," one neighbor said.

The man's condition is unclear. Neighbors only know the man by his nickname, "Jersey."

Neighbors told Elliot a woman made it out of the home unharmed.

Mayes said she noticed some smoke and flames on Saturday afternoon.

"There was a guy running out, and he was on fire," Mayes said. "And he just collapsed in the middle of the street. It was crazy. And the next thing you know, flames just started rising out of the trailer.

Neighbors called 911 and then say they heard an explosion.

Mayes said a woman inside the mobile home rushed out right after him and that she wasn't hurt.

The woman refused to comment because she wanted to ride to the hospital with the victim.

The man was transported to the Grady Burn Unit.

Fire investigators say it could take a couple of days before they determine what started the fire.
