More snow for Atlanta? Not so fast

ATLANTA — Internet rumors are flying about another winter storm bearing down on metro Atlanta, but Severe Weather Team 2 meteorologists say that it might be more rumor than fact.

Channel 2 meteorologists Brad Nitz and David Chandley said they've seen a European weather model map floating around on social media that indicates up to 7 inches of snow could fall on the city of Atlanta late next week. The same 7- to 8-day forecast model shows up to 10 inches of snow in the north Georgia mountains next weekend.

"The challenge for us is that these models that we've always looked at are now available on the Internet," Chandley said. "Amateur meterologists are posting the maps thinking this is going to happen, but for us its just a guide, a road map."

Nitz and Chandley said another run of the same model is drastically different with a small amount of snow in the northeast Georgia mountains and nothing in Atlanta.

Chandley and Nitz said another model they use, the GFS model, shows snow hundreds of miles away near Ohio.

"It doesn't mean it's not going to happen, it's something we're going to watch, but one run from one model is not a forecast," Nitz said.
