Metro citizens say they’re feeling the pain of rising prices

ATLANTA — Many of us have been feeling and seeing the prices of gas go up, but inflation is not stopping there. We’re noticing it is costing more inside our restaurants and grocery stores.

“The inflation is real,” said Nekeasia Seabrum.

Seabrum said lately things are too real, especially when it comes to shopping and putting food on her table.

“It’s very frustrating, knowing that the prices, keep going up,” said Seabrum.

Seabrum said this is true for everything, “Water, gas, rent, protein, produce, wheat, vegetables, it’s up at least 3-10%.”

When asked if she noticed the price increases, Sadonna Grimes replied, “Oh gosh, yes.”

Grimes said she’s noticing food is costing more.

“Almost doubled. I wanted to get some grass-fed ground beef and all of that. It’s bad, it’s really bad. It’s definitely meat, and perhaps snacks and things like that nature.”

Grimes is right. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor, food prices are up. From February 2021 to February 2022, meats, poultry, fish and eggs are up 13%, dairy products have increased 5.2% and fruits and vegetables are up 7.6%.

It’s not just inside the grocery stores. Restaurants are noticing the change as well.

“I think inflation is affecting everyone,” said Alre Alston, owner of Peach Cobbler Café on Peachtree Road in Buckhead.

Alston’s restaurant focuses on soul food cooking, but lately, they too are feeling the pressure of inflation.

“We’re paying more for food. We’re paying more for food to be delivered to us. So all of that is hitting us at one time. Sometimes, the customer may see that, ‘Hey, the prices went up a little bit.’ Well the prices went up because it went up on us, so it’s like a global effect,” said Alston.
