Carly Sharec said she was walking her schnauzer Bowser outside her home when three vicious dogs attacked them, knocking her to the ground and yanking Bowser from her arms.

“I was screaming,” said Sharec. “I was trying to get back to the house when they yanked him from my arms. They got us on the ground and were ripping into his leg. The smaller dog was trying to rip into his neck.”

Dawsonville Mayor James Grogan lives next door and heard Sharec’s screams. He said he grabbed his lopping shears and ran to the rescue.

“I ran on up, and I got my lopping shears,” said Grogan. “I’m swinging them around, and I holler at them again, and they move off.” %

Grogan helped Sharec and Bowser back into their house, then called the Sheriff’s Office and EMTs. Sharec suffered some bites along with cuts and bruises. Bowser needed surgery to repair his damaged leg, but should be okay.

Sharec called the mayor a hero who saved her life and the life of her dog.

“He is an incredible guy, obviously,” said Sharec. “He saved our lives. We were within seconds of a different outcome.”

Grogan, who is just entering his second term as Dawsonville’s mayor, downplayed his role.

“I didn’t do a whole lot,” said Grogan. “You know, God put me there for a reason, and we took care of business. That’s what we do in the city of Dawsonville.”

Animal Control located the three dogs two days later. They are in quarantine to see if they have rabies.
