The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said a deputy shot and killed a man in Carroll County after the suspect attacked him with a shovel.

Investigators said the deputy killed 26-year-old Marc Denver Thompson at the Circle K gas station on Linda Lane and Highway 27 on Saturday night.

Thompson was accused earlier in the day of threatening his mother and brother with a gun. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office said both escaped the house and called police.

Thompson barricaded himself at the home off Henson Circle but got out before the SWAT team came in the home, according to investigators.

The sheriff’s office obtained warrants for Thompson’s arrest and issued a “be on the lookout” notice for him.

Around 10 p.m. Saturday, the GBI said a deputy saw Thompson at the Circle K threatening the clerk with the shovel and called for backup before he entered the store.

Thompson hit the deputy in the head with the shovel and the deputy shot at Thompson several times, killing him inside the store. The deputy was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The shooting is still under investigation. This is the 82nd officer-involved shooting investigation for the GBI in 2019.
