APD: Teen dies in first murder of the year

ATLANTA — Atlanta Police say an 18-year-old high school student died after he was shot in the stomach inside a home on Epworth Street in Southwest Atlanta early Tuesday morning. It was the first murder in Atlanta in 2013.

"We had two males that were involved in a dispute. We don't know what the subject of the dispute was, but it resulted in one of the males shot," said Atlanta Police Sgt. Eddie Smith.

The medical examiners identified the victim as Jared Billings. A woman who identified herself as Billings aunt said her nephew was shot by a young man he knew who was harassing him.

"My nephew was asleep, he started messing with the boy. He had a .25 caliber automatic. He kept messing with the child," said Patricia Adams.

Adams said he ordered the man to leave her home and drove him to a local store. She continued on an errand, and said the man returned to her home while she was away.

"He shot my little nephew. For no reason," said Adams. Paramedics rushed the teenager to Grady Hospital.

Atlanta police said they continue to gather information in the case, but have not made an arrest.
