Man drowns in Lake Lanier

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A 33-year-old man drowned in Lake Lanier Sunday in a cove off of Ga. Hwy. 369 in northeast Forsyth County, authorities said.

Forsyth County sheriff's officials received the call about 3:30 p.m.

caller said a man was on a raft in the Athens Park Road area with other people when he jumped into the water and never resurfaced. The Hall County Fire Department Dive Team was already working in the area and responded to the scene. 

At about 4:30 p.m., the dive team recovered the man’s body in the same area where he was last seen. He was pronounced dead at the scene, sheriff's officials said.

"According to deputies at the scene, the cove where the man was located is about 40 feet deep in certain locations. The man was on a float that measured 8 feet by 10 feet with several other people," sheriff's officials said in a news release.

The man’s name has not been released pending notification of family.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Section is investigating the drowning.
