Man dies in SW Atlanta house fire

ATLANTA,None — A man pulled from a burning home died Wednesday morning.

Channel 2's Michael Buczyner went to the home on Brewer Boulevard in southwest Atlanta, where firefighters were investigating.

Atlanta fire investigators said the fire started in a bedroom at the back of the house. A firefighter told Buczyner the victim was found unconscious about 30 feet from the front door.

"I seen smoke coming from a neighbor's house and called 911," neighbor Percy Freeman told Buczyner.

Freeman said he watched as firefighters ran into his neighbor's burning home around 8 a.m.

"You could hear it popping. You couldn't see the house from the smoke," Freeman said.

Minutes later, Freeman and his neighbors watched as firefighters carried out the lifeless body of a 53-year-old man discovered unconscious inside the home. He was the brother of a woman who lives in the home.

"He had a few burns on his arms. They were trying to resuscitate him," Freeman said.

The firefighter who carried the man outside said it looked like he died fighting for his life.

"It looked like he was trying to make his way out and didn't quite make it," Atlanta firefighter Paul Rojas told Buczyner.
