Lightning strikes set fire to 3 houses in Gwinnett County

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities said lightning was the cause of at least three early-morning house fires in Gwinnett County.

One video showed a fire at a home on Little Lisa Lane in Snellville.

Investigators said it was one of two homes that were significantly damaged.

Neighbors reported hearing a loud boom before the homes caught fire.

Officials warn residents to be weather aware, especially when they see lightning.

"Lightning either strikes outside and travels in, igniting fires in the basement or the ground floor, or they can strike high in the attic, causing an intense fire," Capt. Tommy Rutledge said.

Investigators sent Channel 2 Action News a picture of a home on Spanish Oak Drive in Lilburn. They said it had a basement fire after a lightning strike.
