Howell Mill to remain closed indefinitely after leak

ATLANTA — Howell Mill Road remains shut down near 14th Street as city officials examine a crack in the road and a sink hole that has formed nearby.

The road was shut down Tuesday to look into potential damage from a leak and the sink hole.

On Wednesday, Commissioner of Atlanta Department of Public Works Richard Mendoza, said it does not look like the structure of the bridge in the area is damaged.

The road remains closed as the department looks into a crack in the road and the developing sinkhole.

Mendoza noted that he is looking into whether nearby construction played a role in the newly-formed crack in the road.

Crews are planning to dig up the pavement to determine what caused the crack and sinkhole, and Mendoza said the road will be closed indefinitely.

Drivers are advised to use Northside Drive between 14th and 16th streets as an alternate route.
