Innocent bystander shot outside Atlanta Waffle House after fight, police say

ATLANTA — An innocent bystander is at the hospital after a fight at a downtown Atlanta Waffle House.

The shooting happened early Wednesday morning along Courtland Street and John Wesley Dobbs Avenue.

Atlanta police say it started with a fight among the suspect and a group of people waiting inside the Waffle House for a take-out order around 3:45 a.m.

They all left but continued the argument outside and got into their cars.

A spokesperson for Waffle House explains that’s when the shooting started.

“When our grill operator cleared the store, that one individual apparently went to his car and the other folks who had been involved in whatever the disagreement was got in their vehicles. They were parked in front of our store,” said spokesperson Njeri Boss. “Then drove against traffic and shooting at what appears to be the vehicles of the people he was involved in the argument, but of course struck the building and an innocent bystander.”

The victim was a 58-year-old man, who was taken to the hospital where he is stable.

Atlanta police got to the scene in seconds, hearing the shots and even saw the shooter racing away the wrong way down the street. But they couldn’t catch him with the suspect.

Authorities are still searching for the shooter.
