I-75 reopened after chase ends in crash

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Interstate 75 was shut down for hours at Mt. Paran Road due to a police chase Monday.

According to the Cobb County Police Department, a woman robbed the Sun Trust Bank at 1755 Mars Hill Road around 11 a.m. and police pursued her onto the interstate, where she crashed her car.

"She wrecked on her own lost control and went sideways," Cobb County Police Officer Mike Bowman said.

Police said the woman gave a bank teller a note saying she had a bomb. An officer spotted her car and tried to pull her over, but she took off, police said.

"The suspect at the point, accelerated at a high speed to get away from the traffic stop. A chase did ensue down Mars Hill Road across and over Dallas Highway," Bowman said.

The woman was taken into custody on I-75, and authorities searched the car for explosives. The ordeal created massive gridlock around lunchtime.

Channel 2's Ryan Young was there as members of the Atlanta Police SWAT team and Cobb County bomb squad members searched the car. Cobb County police have not said whether any devices were found inside.
