I-285 stretch gets speed limit hike

ATLANTA — Big news for commuters on Interstate 285 – you no longer have to drive 55.

Beginning Friday afternoon, the speed limit on the 27 mile stretch of I-285 south of Interstate 20 will jump to 65 MPH.

"We believe I-285, which has as many as seven and no fewer than four travel lanes in each direction, can safely accommodate this increase and the new 65-mph speed will be more consistent with current driver expectations and behavior," said GDOT Chief Engineer Russell McMurry.

Georgia law caps speed limits at 65 for interstates in urban areas, GDOT said.

Crews will begin uncovering the signs revealing the new speed limit around noon.
