Fulton County Police said the burglars knocked on the door of the home on Diann Drive around 11:45 a.m. Tuesday. Investigators say when no one answered, the burglars kicked open the door and went inside. They did not know the homeowner was there.

"He said a lady knocked first," said a neighbor who didn't wish to be identified. She spoke with home owner shortly after the shootout.

"Then after he didn't go to the door, they kicked the door in,” she said. “They came in his house."

That neighbor said she heard the shooting as she was trying to take a nap.

"As soon as I laid down, I heard about 30 to 40 shots," she said.

Police said the home owner wounded one of the burglars. They tried to get away in a car, but crashed it into a hedge in the front yard, so they ran away, according to police.

Investigators later found the wounded man in some nearby woods. He's in serious condition at Grady Memorial Hospital. Police continue to search for the others involved.
