Hit-and-run victim’s family believed police had warrants in the case. Police told us they didn’t

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — A Clayton County family breathed a sigh of relief when they found police had arrest warrants for a suspect accused of killing their loved one in hit-and-run.

But the family says that relief turned into anger when Channel 2′s Tom Jones learned police have not filed any warrants.

“A scale from 1 to 10, I’m at 20. That’s how much it hurts,” Porsha Calhoun said.

Police say a hit-and-run driver killed Calhoun’s husband Javes last month. His mother is also hurting after the loss of her son. But that’s not all that is causing the pain.

“We’re not at ease at all and it’s so frustrating because we want justice for him,” Mignon Jones said.

Calhoun and Cya Tookes were in separate cars when they noticed a car had flipped over on I-75 near Tara Boulevard. Both tried to rescue the family.

That is when police say a driver crossed several lanes and crashed into them. Calhoun died from his injuries. Tookes’ father says his daughter suffered serious injuries.

“She was in critical condition and now she’s just a step below critical,” her father Sean Wiggins told Channel 2.

Police said the driver ran from the scene and officers learned the car is registered to a woman.

Calhoun’s mother said an officer sent an email on Oct. 14 indicating arrest warrants were taken for a suspect: a man.

“I was very hopeful. Cause I’m thinking ‘OK, we got him.’”

But when Channel 2′s Tom Jones called police to ask about the arrest warrant, a department spokesperson told him that no warrants had been filed.

“And I don’t understand that. that’s what we’re getting. we’re getting lies,” Mignon Jones said.

Police said they do have several leads that they are following. Tookes’ father said police need to get their act together and get that driver off the streets.

“I think it will make us all feel better,” Wiggins said.

Calhoun said police telling them one thing and the media another thing only adds to her pain.

“I cry myself to sleep every night. Cause he’s not there,” she said fighting back tears.

The families told Channel 2 that after all they have been through, they need police to communicate the correct information.
