Community comes together to help baby fighting rare cancer

HENRY COUNTY, Ga. — A local community is coming together to help a little girl who is fighting a rare form of cancer.

Henry County residents are putting on their annual "Cars 4 a Cure," a car show that this year will benefit 9-month-old Willow Crowe. Willow is fighting a rare form of tissue cancer.

Channel 2 Action News was in Henry County where we met with Willow and her family and found out how you can help her and other children fighting diseases.

Willow was diagnosed with Langerhans cell histiocytosis in June. Her mother,  Natalie, explained what the disease is to Stouffer.

"Essentially she has too many infection fighting cells and so what they do is collect in different places in her body and then they start to cause damage," Crowe said.

With medical bills mounting for the Crowe family, the organizer of an annual event to raise money for cancer patients has chosen Willow's family to help this year.

Charles Hoard and his friend started the 'Cars 4 a Cure' car show four years ago to help a friend whose daughter was born with cancer.

Hoard said since then, he has been pleased to see his event grow even bigger.

"When we started this thing, we had about maybe 50-75 cars, and the car show has grown to a little over 100, 150," Hoard said. "It's really really grown into an entire community event and we're so blessed and we're so thankful."

This year, Cars 4 a Cure is raising money for Willow's care, which includes multiple rounds of chemotherapy.

In addition to the car show, a bloodmobile will also be on hand to collect blood for other people battling cancer.

"Cancer patients have blood transfusions quite often and so the more blood that we can collect, the more we can help folks with cancer, especially little children," Hoard said.

Last year's event raised just shy of $10,000.

This year's Cure 4 a Cause is Sunday, Oct. 7th at the Henry County Judicial Center in McDonough.
