Heads up: Law enforcement is cracking down on distracted drivers in South Fulton County

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — There’s a new campaign to target distracted drivers in Georgia during Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

The Governor’s Office for Highway Safety is making a big push this week. Officers were in Albany Wednesday, and on Thursday, they will be near Fairburn.

Channel 2′s Steve Gehlbach is at the location off of I-85 where law enforcement will be staked out, but can’t reveal exactly where it is.

The operation includes state troopers and local law enforcement. They won’t be hidden like we’ve seen in the past, where officers may be dressed as construction or utility workers.

And they won’t be on the interstates where we’ve ridden along on other crackdowns.

“We’ll be standing on street corners basically, not trying to hide, we’re wearing our normal clothes, wearing a traffic vest and pointing out to those enforcement officers, state troopers and local agencies point out those people driving distracted as well as not wearing a seatbelt,” said Roger Hayes, with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

Gehlbach spoke with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety about the numbers they’re seeing, the same amount of traffic deaths this year compared to the same time last year.

But that’s even with traffic counts down about 10 percent due to the pandemic.
