Video shows intense moment police shot man outside doctor's office, killing him

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — New video Channel 2 Action News obtained shows the moment Gainesville police shot and killed a man outside a doctor's office in Hall County.

The shooting happened near Jesse Jewell Parkway and Wisteria Drive Friday afternoon. Witnesses reported seeing a gunman near the Northeast Physicians Group building before officers arrived.

A spokesperson with the Gainesville Police Department told Channel 2 Action News that the suspect was shot by police, but no officers were shot.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called to respond to the scene and later confirmed the suspect had died. On Saturday, the GBI identified him as 21-year-old Adam Paul English of Oakwood. The GBI said he was waving a gun and walking in the area of Jesse Jewell Parkway.

The deadly shooting caused Jesse Jewell Parkway near Summit Street to be shut down, and traffic was diverted away from the area.

In the 14-second video a viewer sent us, five gunshots can be heard before a man falls to the ground. Five police officers then walk toward him with their guns drawn.

"Around 5 this evening, we received a call saying there was a gunman in the area of the hospital," Lt. Andy Smith said.

Smith said when Gainesville police got to Jesse Jewell Parkway in front of the Northeast Georgia Physicians Group, they spotted the man several people had reported seeing.

"Our officers responded to the scene, located the individual, gave verbal commands to the individual. The individual failed to comply with those commands and at which time gunfire erupted," Smith said.

The GBI is now in charge of the investigation.

Channel 2's Christian Jennings asked Smith if it is confirmed that the suspect had a weapon.

"That is also going to be determined in the investigation," he replied.
