Gwinnett man rescued from Afghanistan with help from his employer

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Millions of people are fighting to get out of Afghanistan after the Taliban took over. Many of those are Americans trapped in the country.

Business owner, Melanie Caceres, helped bring an employee home that was stuck in Kabul. Caceres says the employee, whom we are not identifying for his own safety, has worked with her for years.

Caceres, a former military member, launched her own rescue mission after hearing what was going on in Kabul.

“In the back of my mind, is he going to do something that I told him to say with good information and it’s going to cause him to die. That’s a lot of stress and a lot to worry about there,” said Caceres.

While Caceres worked the phones, the man’s wife and children remained at their Gwinnett County home fearful of the outcome.

Channel 2′s Tony Thomas spoke with the wife of the employee.

“I worry about him, now I’m so worried about when he’s coming.”

She has good reason to worry about his safety. Parts of Kabul are in chaos as thousands flee the Taliban, hoping to get on a military flight to safety.

However, with the help of Caceres, the employee let her know he made it out by sending her a text.

“There has never been a text message that I ever received or have ever received that will be better than that,” said Caceres.

Although he is safe, his wife now fears for the safety of the rest of their family in Afghanistan.

“Help these people in Afghanistan. The people work with them, because my family works with the army and they are very scared.”
