Police considering charges after videos of parents disciplining daughter goes viral

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — In a series of videos that have gone viral on social media, a Georgia couple confronted their teenage daughter while sharing it live on social media.

Channel 2′s Gwinnett County Bureau Chief Tony Thomas said that now, police are considering criminal charges. We are not identifying the daughter because she is a juvenile or the parents because they have not been charged.

The videos appear to show a Gwinnett County father and his wife confronting their 14-year-old daughter about lying, stealing and repeatedly running away.

“You ready to take this ride? Cause I got you live on my phone,” her father says in one video.

He then slaps her repeatedly and slams her down.

“Are you ready to handle that? No?” he says on the video as the daughter screams and runs away.

The father gets more physical, chasing after his daughter and pinning her to the ground.

“They are talking about how she likes some of that George Floyd (expletive),” her mother taunts her.

Police departments across metro Atlanta got calls about the video.

Gwinnett County Police Sgt. Jennifer Richter said they have now confirmed the incident occurred last weekend at a house in Buford. A detective spoke with the teen and confirmed she is in a safe home with a guardian.

Officers said they want to speak to the couple before filing any charges.

“At this point, we haven’t had any luck in doing that, so we would like to ask for them to reach out to us,” Richter said.

In a video recorded later, the father did his own live video explaining that he was simply trying to protect and teach his daughter about predators.

“What I was doing by sitting on my daughter’s chest was to show her how easy it was to get control of her,” he said.

Thomas spoke with the guardian, the woman who is now taking care of the teen. She confirms the girls is safe and happy.
