Performance venues allowed to reopen this week -- but will they?

Entertainment venues are allowed to reopen this weekend as long as they follow a list of health safety measures.

Channel 2′s Tom Regan was at the Infinite Energy Arena in Gwinnett County, where fans might be hard-pressed to see a live show anytime soon.

Under state guidelines, venues are being asked to have empty seats between parties of patrons for social distancing. They are also calling for staggered entry and exits.

Employees will have to wear masks and venues will be asked to install plexiglass at ticket counters and concession stands.

Regan talked to Infinite Energy Center Chief Officer of Operations Stan Hall about when they may resume live performances.

"I suspect certainly late this year, perhaps early next year," Hall said. "And I think that is the consensus of all the facilities that are tier three in the Governor's description."

Hall said that of course, that could change depending on the course of the virus -- for better or for worse.

Halls said they have started booking some small events at their convention center, but still only around 20% of what they usually do.

“How much diminished capacity are you talking about?” Regan asked Hall.

“It’s probably a third,” Hall said.

Eddie’s Attic, a smaller music venue in Decatur, told Regan it probably won’t reopen till Spring.

Many clubs also aren’t hiring performers, like rapper Yae Dotta.

“No shows. They’re only letting clubs open up to party, not paying artists,” Dotta said.

He told Regan he’s working other revenue streams to try to fill the gap.

“Streaming, social media. All artists, like myself. I have a clothing line, called Work Clothes. You got have a brand about yourself,” Dotta said.

Many entertainment venues say they probably won’t reopen until there’s a vaccine or sharp decline in COVID-19 cases.
