Gwinnett police fire officer accused of hitting teens with car

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A Gwinnett County police officer has been fired after he was accused of hitting two pedestrians on Sunday night.

Officer Scott York was terminated from the Gwinnett County Police Department Tuesday, citing policy violations.

Police said the officer was traveling westbound on Singleton Road near Stonewood Drive around 9 p.m. en route to a different pedestrian accident.

Police said as he was driving, he left the roadway and traveled up onto the curb and hit two people walking on the sidewalk.

The patrol car hit cousins Jose Coreas-Mejia, 16, and 18-year-old Joel Melendez-Coreas.

Coreas-Mejia was listed in serious condition at the hospital and Melendez-Coreas has been released from the hospital.

York suffered minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital.

Police said based on their evidence, including skid marks on the pavement and the black box data from the patrol car, York was driving approximately 97 mph just before the crash.

The Gwinnett County Police Department offers their "full support to the Coreas and Melendez families as they cope with Jose’s extensive injuries."

Police said the criminal investigation is still active and charges are likely within the upcoming week.
