Loyal customers raise money for beloved Kroger employee diagnosed with life-changing disease

SUWANEE, Ga. — Amy Gregory has done a bit of shopping in her time, and she says a supermarket is much more than just groceries.

“Patrick is just one of those people who lights up a room,” Gregory said.

She’s talking about Patrick Hobdy. He’s been with Kroger for 28 years, much of that time in the Suwanee store.

“He just cares about people. He wants to know about you and he is interested in your life. He makes you smile,” Gregory said.

To Patrick, the customers aren’t just part of the job he loves. They’re family.

“I watch children grow before my eyes. It’s an awesome feeling to be part of seeing these young children grow up,” Patrick said.

And now, longtime friends have opened their hearts and their pocketbooks to help Patrick. He was recently diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and is experiencing serious symptoms.

When those who shop in the store heard about the mounting medical bills, they created a GoFundMe.

“I’m just so overwhelmed with the support I’ve received. This is my life,” Patrick said.

To add some fun to the fundraising, customers have been snapping silly pictures of themselves with their purchases. It’s all to show support for Patrick, who is extremely thankful for their efforts.

“Thank you. Thank you so much,” Patrick said.
