'He was such a loving child': Mother mourns son killed in crash near school

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A Gwinnett County mother is calling for changes along the stretch of road where her son died after leaving school.

Sonia Ramcharan has spent the last two weeks barely able to spend a moment without thinking about her 17-year-old son Shan.

He died in a two-vehicle crash just down the street from North Gwinnett High School as he has leaving campus.

"He was such a loving child. He was so supporting. He supported his family," Sonia Ramcharan said.

She said he was in junior ROTC and wanted to enlist in the U.S. military, even though his mother had reservations.

"He said ... 'You're telling me no, why?' and I was like, 'Because you're going to die and leave me. You're my only son and I need you,'" she said.

Shan Ramcharan was traveling west on Moore Road in Suwanee when police say he lost control of his Nissan and entered the path of a truck.

Police are investigating whether he was speeding.

His mother showed Channel 2's Matt Johnson the dash camera that she said her son bought so she could look at the footage every night.

"He said, 'Because I want you to see that I'm safe. I drive safe and that I'm taking care of the car,'" she said.

Police have not released the dash camera video because the investigation is ongoing.

Neighbors said it's the most serious crash of the four they've seen on the stretch of road in two years.

While police investigate the crash, Sonia Ramcharan wants to protect other students.

"There's got to be a speed bump or stop sign or something. There's a lot of speeding going on on that road," she said.

She also wants parents to know how quickly lives can end.

"Cherish your kids, because they could leave and never come back home," she said.

Sonia Ramacharn said if her son didn't join the military, he wanted to become a police officer.
