Man took his kids to leasing office after killing their mom, police say

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Police told Channel 2 Action News a man in Gwinnett County shot and killed his wife at an apartment complex before killing himself.

The couple leaves behind three young children.

The incident happened Saturday morning at the Sugar Mill Apartment complex in Lawrenceville.

The woman’s sister told Channel 2’s Lauren Pozen that the couple had been having marital issues, and neighbors said they were stunned to hear what happened just next door to them.

“It is scary. It is crazy,” one neighbor said.

Police said they were called to the apartment of Kalvin and Gentorica Wright around 9:30 a.m. after Kalvin dropped his three children off at the complex’s leasing office and the children told the staff there that their father had killed their mother.

Police said the children were in the home when Wright shot and killed their mother. The children are all under the age of 10.

"When police got the call, the female had apparently already been shot. That was the time that he dropped off the children to the leasing office, who then called 911," Detective David Smith with the Gwinnett County Police Department said.

Police say Wright left the leasing office and then returned to the apartment and shot himself.

“He just was really sweet. I was shocked,” a neighbor told Pozen, asking not to be identified.

The neighbor said the husband did maintenance work at the apartment complex.

“He was a really nice man. Anytime we have maintenance issues he would come,” the neighbor said.

She told Pozen that her heart broke for the children, who are now staying with family.

“He took them to the office, but I just hate that they had to see that happen to their mom. I can’t imagine living with that memory,” the neighbor said.

Pozen spoke to the sister of Kalvin Wright, who said he loved his wife and kids.

A notice is from the apartment management was put on the doors of the units in the couple’s building saying they are cooperating with the investigation.
