GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett County firefighters say two separate house fires on Memorial Day in the Snellville area were started by fireworks.

The first one started just after 10 p.m. on Westminster Drive.

That home ended up with damage to the side of the house along with the second floor and attic.

The second fire started just before 10:30 p.m. on Laurel Falls Drive and damaged the garage, attic and a vehicle inside the garage.

In both cases, the people who lived in the homes had to get assistance from the Red Cross.

State law allows fireworks to be set off from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. on non-holidays, according to local police agencies. All types of consumer fireworks are legal, including bottle rockets and hand-held sparklers.

Gwinnett County Fire Rescue says, “Used fireworks devices should be cooled by soaking in a bucket of water for several hours before being discarded in the trash.”

Luckily in these cases, no one was hurt.
