Gov. Kemp closes state offices Tuesday due to incoming winter weather

ATLANTA — Gov. Brian Kemp announced Monday that state offices will be closed Tuesday due to incoming winter weather.

"We want everyone to be safe," Kemp said.

Kemp and Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms held a news conference Monday to talk about how they're preparing for the threat of snow and ice.

Bottoms also announced that Atlanta offices, including City Hall, will be closed due to the weather.

Bottoms talked about the impact this weather could have on Super Bowl week activities.

"We have been in contact with the NFL," Bottoms said.

Kemp said the Georgia Department of Transportation is already preparing the roads ahead of the winter weather.

He said crews will be out Tuesday salting bridges to keep them from icing over.

As of 11:30 a.m., Atlanta Public Schools, Clayton County Schools, Cobb County Schools, DeKalb County Schools, Floyd County Schools, Fulton County Schools, Gilmer County Schools, Paulding County Schools, Randolph County Schools and Union County Schools announced they will be closed Tuesday because of the incoming winter weather. Georgia State University will also be closed.

The I-75 South Metro Express Lanes will close in both directions at 11 a.m., and the Northwest Corridor Express Lanes will close in both directions at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 29, 2019, according to GDOT.

Channel 2's Tyisha Fernandes spoke with Georgia Department of Transportation who are prepping the roads for the weather. Trucks in west central Georgia will begin brining the regions interstates and state highways at 7 p.m.

With the Super Bowl less than a week away, NFL officials have been included in the plans on what's being done to keep metro Atlanta's roads clear from snow and ice.

"Everyone across the world is coming to Atlanta to enjoy the Super Bowl. We want to see, the city of Atlanta and the NFL, a success for this event, so we’re assisting in any way we can," said Bryan Haines, with the GDOT.
