Georgia teen wins ticket to Hollywood on 'American Idol’

GEORGIA — An Acworth teenager accustomed to singing at church on Sundays is taking her talents to a much larger stage.

Camryn Leigh Smith, 16, auditioned in front of “American Idol” judges this Sunday. Smith won a golden ticket to proceed to the Hollywood round.

We caught up with Smith at WSB-TV studios this week to get to know the “American Idol” hopeful.

She’s been singing since she was 8 years old and spends every Sunday leading worship at her church.

“I usually lead every Sunday. If it’s not in my own church, it’s with my dad, at a different church. I’m always singing on Sundays,” she said.

Her parents were the ones who encouraged her to audition for ABC’s hit show this season.

“It’s not the first thing I would have chosen for myself,” she said.

She said she realized she could get great experience from auditioning.

“I hope it brings me more opportunities,” Smith said.

She said regardless of whether she wins the nationwide competition, she hopes this experience leads her to write more worship and inspire more people.

Her mother, Kim Smith, said she’s been so impressed with how her daughter has handled the life-changing experience so far.

“She’s been such a light,” her mother said.

Good luck, Camryn!
