GDOT prepares for potential black ice

ATLANTA — The Georgia Department of Transportation is taking measures to prepare for potential winter conditions on the roads.

Non-stop rain this week has caused some road problems with downed trees and power lines, but now GDOT is monitoring conditions in case there is a potential for black ice.

GDOT has positioned 11 salt barns throughout metro Atlanta in potential trouble spots. The idea is that the salt trucks will be able to refill without traveling a long distance.

Mark McKinnon of GDOT told Channel 2 his biggest concern for freezing is elevated ramps.

Crews will also use liquid brine this year in the event of black ice. Transportation officials said the key to liquid brine is to spray it after the rain stops but before the temperatures plunge.
