Friends hold candlelight vigil for slain GSU athlete

ATLANTA — Friends gathered to remember a former Georgia State University soccer player shot and killed early Sunday morning.

Police said someone killed Ayokunle Lumpkin on Milton Avenue after a dispute.

"This gentleman lost control, hit a fence, spun through the yard and hit a car in the driveway," friend Tyler Claburn told Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri. "He proceeded to drive away."

Claburn said Lumpkin went after the driver, trying to make him wait for police.

"They were just trying to do the right thing. Things got out of hand and then there were gunshots," Claburn said.

According to police, Lumpkin died at Grady Memorial Hospital from his injuries.

More than 100 people turned up at a northeast Atlanta apartment complex to honor Lumpkin with a candlelight vigil.

"Just hold on to him because it's not fair... He's supposed to be here with us," said his girlfriend.

Police recovered the car involved in the shooting but said they have made no arrests.
