Fire at vacant home threatens business

ATLANTA — Firefighters are investigating a fire that destroyed a house and nearly burned the business next door in southeast Atlanta.

When firefighters arrived, they said there was no hope in saving the vacant home on Harriett Street, so their focus was to make sure the business next door did not go up in flames.

There were flames shooting from the front, back and roof of the house when firefighters arrived early Thursday morning.

The business next door was closed when the fire broke out. The building suffered some water damage and also minor damage to the door.

Neighbors told Channel 2's Darryn Moore the house that caught fire has been vacant for at least 10 years, and they see people coming in and out of it at times.
