Family mourns fallen soldier

GRIFFIN, Ga. — The family of a fallen soldier is mourning the loss of the 20-year-old expectant father killed just days ago in Afghanistan.

Pfc. Johnathon F. Davis, a 2010 Griffin High School graduate, was shot in the head by a sniper as he cleared a rooftop in Afghanistan on Thursday, relatives said.

Kristen Davis, the widow of the aspiring paramedic, is eight months pregnant.  She said her husband was looking forward to the impending arrival of their son, Benjamin.

“He was like ‘I really can’t wait to get home.  I’m ready for you to have that baby, so I can see what he looks like,’” she said.  “He carried the ultrasound picture in his wallet.  He was really excited.”

Kenneth Davis said his brother’s death comes as a devastating shock to the entire family.

“Never once in my mind I thought my family would be in this situation,” he said.  “Even though I know it was possible.”

Davis’ family said he was deployed about a month ago.

The family said a funeral will be held sometime next week at First Assembly of God Church at West McIntosh Road in Spalding County.
