Family of 4 escapes fire that destroys DeKalb home

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A family of four is now safe after escaping a fire in their DeKalb County home overnight.

The fire happened in Decatur on Second Avenue.

Channel 2′s Bryan Mims was on the scene of the fire during Channel 2 News This Morning.

Video shows extensive damage to the two-story home. Mims said the home was charred and completely gutted inside.

Decatur Fire Department said they got the call about the fire around 2:40 a.m. When they got to the scene, heavy fire was showing at the front of the house.

Smoke alarms alerted the family of the fire.

The two adults and two children made it out safely with no injuries.

Channel 2 attempted to speak with the family but they declined to speak as they are processing what happened.

The assistant fire chief of DFD said the fire may have started from the front porch.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
