Elderly woman rescued from DeKalb apartment fire

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — An elderly woman says a neighbor carried her out of an apartment fire in DeKalb County after she was overcome by smoke.

The fire broke out Friday morning at an apartment building on Central Drive in Stone Mountain.

The woman told Channel 2's Rachel Stockman she was in her apartment with her two grandchildren when the fire broke out. She said a neighbor she did not know rescued her.

Firefighters said the top floors of the apartment building were completely destroyed by the fire.

One firefighter was transported to the hospital as a precaution, possibly due to overexertion, the DeKalb County fire chief said.
