Bedridden woman dies in DeKalb house fire

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities say a woman died in a DeKalb County house fire.

DeKalb fire officials said the woman was bedridden and on oxygen at the home on Timor Trail near Lithonia. She is described as a woman in her 50s. Sources told Channel 2 Action News the woman had been ill and a caregiver was also inside when the fire started in the victim's bedroom about 3 p.m.

Channel 2's Richard Elliot saw a long line of fire trucks when he quickly arrived at the scene.

He spoke to three men who said they tried to rescue the victim, but her oxygen tank exploded.

"We came outside because we saw commotion. We saw smoke. We tried to run into the house to help, but it was too smoky. The fire was too big. It had grown already. The oxygen ignited the flames," said Dino Lyons.

Lyons also told Elliot he grabbed a garden hose, but the flames were too intense.
