Dog owner charged with reckless conduct after teen killed

A teenager was killed by a car while running from two dogs, and now the dogs' owner is charged with reckless conduct. Witnesses say the owner left the scene.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Lashawn Murphy was witness to a fatal accident she has struggled with for four months.

“How do you just leave a dog and a child on the side of the road?" Murphy asks.

Murphy was driving on Old National Highway in South Fulton County the night 17-year-old Davon Jiggets was being chased by two pit bulls. While trying to get away, Jiggets ran in front of a car. The teen and one of the pit bulls died. Murphy said the owner of the dogs witnessed the accident, too.

“She walked off into the woods with her other dog," Murphy said.

Fulton County police tracked the dogs to 23-year-old Diamond Jefferson. Jefferson was cited for reckless conduct.

Jiggets' mother, Alicia Jiggets said she is disappointed Jefferson only faces a misdemeanor charge.

“I don't think the law should let her off so easily with a just citation,” she said.

Jefferson is scheduled to go before a judge Sept. 9.

Jiggets' family said they will be in the courtroom to show their support for their loved one.
