ATLANTA - Delta Air Lines had a big surprise for its employees Wednesday – the Atlanta-based airline will be dolling out more than $1 billion in bonuses for its employees.

Delta’s CEO Ed Bastian made the announcement in front of employees at its headquarters in Atlanta.

The profit-sharing is in its 4th year and will equal out to be about a 10 percent bonus for employees.

“So every employee will receive 10 percent more, based on last year’s earnings. From a local perspective, it’s about $400 million that will get paid out to Atlanta-based employees so it’s a big deal, very big deal,” Bastian said.

The decision was based on last year’s earnings, but because of the recent tax cuts, less tax will come out of that extra income with new brackets.
