DeKalb detention officer charged with sex assault of inmate

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office confirmed to Channel 2 Action News Thursday, it has arrested one of its own, charging the deputy with sexual assault.

The sheriff's office said Detention Officer Zel Mitchell was arrested for allegedly performing inappropriate sex acts with a male inmate at the DeKalb County Jail.

Investigators from the Office of Professional Standards said the sex acts were done in exchange for food and other contraband items Mitchell would obtain for the inmate.

The inmate said he was not forced into the sex acts.

Investigators were tipped off to the incidents when another inmate discovered what was going on and reported it.

Mitchell has been charged with sexual assault on a person in custody, public indecency and violation of oath of office.

He has been fired from the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office and is in custody at the DeKalb County Jail.
