Thief steals nearly $2 million from courier van

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — It took only 10 minutes for a suspected thief to steal nearly $2 million. Inside the van was more than $1.8 million.

Channel 2’s Nefertiti Jaquez went to the Citizens Trust Bank along South Hairston Road in Decatur Wednesday evening where the FBI said someone stole an ATM courier van outside a Decatur bank.

Broken glass still littered the parking lot where a man stole the van containing $1.8 million in cash.

Surveillance was able to capture a blurry shot of the suspect. It's an image of the thief as he's committing the high-priced heist.

“I can't believe he managed to do this,” one woman who did not identify herself told Jaquez. “Seems like an inside job."

The FBI said the van was parked outside the bank on Sept. 8 while two employees with ATM Response Inc. put cash into an ATM at the bank.

Investigators said the workers locked the van but left it running while they went into the bank.

“The ATM room showed a person in dark pants, a baggy gray long-sleeve shirt, with a black backpack approach the vehicle. The suspect pulled on the driver’s side door and then the passenger’s side door,” a news release said about the suspect.

Minutes later, the workers came back outside to find only broken glass where they left their vehicle.

Later that day, the DeKalb County Marshals unit found the van ditched in a neighborhood up the street.

But the suspect and the money were gone.
