Police searching for man they say tried to kidnap Decatur woman

DECATUR, Ga. — Police are seeking a man they say tried to kidnap a woman in Decatur.

Officers released a sketch of the man Thursday in hopes that someone will recognize him.

Investigators told Channel 2’s Audrey Washington that the woman was waiting for a rideshare driver to arrive around 9 p.m. on Dec. 10 when she noticed a man standing underneath some trees on the other side of Sams Street.

“I think it’s disturbing,” neighbor Cris Sangiorge said.

According to the woman, the man crossed the street and then walked past her. But she told police the man then turned around and grabbed her by the wrist. Then he yelled, “Come with me, come with me.”

The woman said she jerked her wrist away and ran to a nearby building. She told police he then headed on foot down East College Avenue.

On Thursday afternoon, Washington showed the police sketch of the man to people who live and work in the area.

“If I were to see him, I would call the authorities,” said Bruce Cummings.

Sangiorge said she survived a similar situation and believes it’s important that women protect themselves at all costs.

“Definitely yell and fight back as hard as you can,” she said.

The woman said the man appeared to be in his late 40s or 50s and is about 5’9” with a noticeable belly.
