Officer taken to hospital after serious crash on I-20 in DeKalb County

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — An officer is recovering after being hit in a wreck on Interstate 20 in DeKalb County.

The crash happened on I-20 westbound past Candler Road (exit 65) Thursday morning.

Channel 2's Tom Regan was at the scene of the rollover crash involving a DeKalb County patrol car and another vehicle.

DeKalb County police confirmed that Officer Yosef Raskin was rear-ended by a civilian while he was on the shoulder doing paperwork. Raskin was taken to a local hospital and had minor injuries but is expected to make a full recovery.

The crash blocked lanes of I-20 WB for hours but cleared just before 1 p.m. Thursday.

“That's pretty bad, whoever did that, needs to investigate what was the cause of that,” Freddie Joseph said.

Joseph, who works nearby, was among those concerned about the welfare of the police officer.

He told Regan that following the crash, surface roads turned a little chaotic from traffic diverted off I-20.

“They need more police to direct them where they need to go. (It would) make it much easier,” Joseph said.

The other driver, also slightly hurt, declined medical care at the scene.
