Family members told Channel 2’s Nicole Carr that the victim, identified as Gerard Foster, 52, was recently married and a recently ordained deacon in a Decatur church.

Foster and his wife, who met through their church, had just celebrated their one year wedding anniversary in June.

Members of the church, to which Foster and his wife belonged, waited anxiously outside the crime tape to get to the couple Wednesday.

A close family friend who described herself as being like a mother to the couple said the Foster's wife called her after the shooting.

"No sense. I don't understand this. I don't understand it, but God knows that whatever happened. He's in control," Betty Williams said.

Foster was shot one time in the stairwell and died at the hospital. No suspects have been named and no motive has been suggested.

Williams says she still can’t grasp what’s happened.

“It's going to be a loss for her and her children and the church and everyone he comes in contact with, because he's just such a nice guy,” Williams said.
