K-9 officer that survived being shot in the head tracks down fatal hit-and-run suspect

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A K-9 officer who lost an eye in a shooting two years ago is a hero once again: On Sunday, officer Indi helped track down a driver who hit and killed a man and fled the scene.

DeKalb County police said Kenzie Flagg, 34, hit a car on the corner of Moreland Avenue and Eastland Road and killed a man in his 70s shortly before 11 p.m. Flagg ran from the scene.

K-9 officer Indi tracked him to a nearby drain pipe where he was hiding, police said.

Flagg was taken into custody. Police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. Flagg is facing vehicular homicide charges.

K-9 Officer Indi's heroics are made even more remarkable by the fact that the dog only has one eye.

On Dec. 13, 2018, Indi was shot in the head while hunting down a suspect accused of shooting and killing a DeKalb County.

Brandon Taylor is accused of killing Officer Edgar Flores, 24, after running from a traffic stop and firing multiple shots at Flores.

Indi and his handler, Officer Norman Larsen, helped track down Taylor, who then fired shots at Indi. The four-legged officer was struck in the head. Taylor was then shot and killed by police.

Indi lost his right eye, but otherwise made a miraculous recovery. He returned to work three months after the shooting.

Larsen told Channel 2 Action News last year that his best friend and partner of six years is a miracle, recovering faster than anyone thought possible from a shot through the eye.

“It was an emotional roller coaster. It goes from thinking you lost your best friend to- well he’s still alive, and it looks pretty good,” Larsen said. “He saved my life. The three SWAT operators, four SWAT operators that was with us. He saved their lives.”

Flores had been with the department just a year and a half. He was engaged about to turn 25.
