Family left without answers 1 year after woman's death on popular walking trail

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — It has been almost a year since a woman's body was found on a popular walking trail and her family is still searching for answers.

Students discovered Shantrelle Monroe’s body near a playground off the Stone Mountain trail Dec. 12, 2018.

DeKalb County police told Channel 2 Action News last year they believed someone lured the 24-year-old to her death. But no arrests have been made in the case yet, which is frustrating Monroe's family.

“We’re all trying to get through this. Trying to make it,” her father James Monroe told Channel 2's Lauren Davis.

Davis attended a prayer candlelight vigil held Sunday night for Shantrelle Monroe, who would have turned 25 Saturday.

Monroe was a basketball player at Tucker High School and her family said she had her whole life ahead of her.

“She didn’t deserve it. She always gave her last,” Debra Monroe, her stepmom said.

In December 2018, police said someone lured Monroe to a walking trail off South Hairston Road, where they shot and killed her.

She was murdered on her mother's birthday. This Thursday will be the one-year anniversary of her death.

“It’s been rough. It’s been hard, I wouldn’t wish this on anybody. I know justice will reveal who murdered my daughter,” her mom Sonya Woods said.

On Sunday night, everyone at the vigil lit candles to remember Shantrelle Monroe. Now they just want justice served.

“I just say something 'cause if it was your family I’m quite sure you’d want someone to say something about your family," James Monroe said.

The family believes the person who did it was someone who knew their daughter. Anyone with information is urged to contact DeKalb police.
