Detectives explain what led them to Hemy Neuman in murder case

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Jurors in the retrial of admitted Dunwoody day care killer Hemy Neuman heard from the defendant himself Wednesday in the form of a 6-hour long taped police interrogation.

The January 2011 interview took place at Dunwoody police headquarters and was, at times, contentious.

Prosecutors said Neuman shot and killed Rusty Sneiderman, because he was having an affair with Sneiderman's wife, his subordinate at GE Energy.

"The jig is up," then Lt. David Barnes told Neuman after several hours of questioning. "You are our man."

The statement came after Barnes and Sgt. Gary Cortellino revealed to Neuman a silver Kia Sedona he'd rented the day before the killing was on surveillance video leaving the Dunwoody Prep preschool parking lot.

"He's saying you're a better business man than you are a criminal," Cortellino can be heard telling Neuman.  "That's the only fault you. have."

Detectives told Neuman there were only about 1,400 Kia Sedonas in the United States, and one was sold to an Enterprise Rental Car location on Windy Hill Road in Marietta.  Once they determined Neuman had rented it the day before the shooting, they did a Google search of his name and learned Neuman worked with Sneiderman's wife at the company's Marietta location.

"Jesus Christ, we were on you in no time," Barnes told Neuman.

Neuman repeatedly denied any involvement in the crime but was visibly shaken during the interview.

"I don't see how you can place me there," said Neuman. "I can't explain the van. I don't know what to tell you."

Neuman later admitted to the killing but later claimed he was insane at the time of the crime. He's facing a retrial after the Georgia Supreme Court overturned his conviction after ruling Judge Gregory A. Adams erred in allowing certain medical records into his first trial.
