1 dead, 1 critical after shooting at DeKalb County motel

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Police are searching for the gunman they say shot and killed one man and left another in critical condition outside a DeKalb County motel around 9:30 a.m.

Channel 2's Tyisha Fernandes was at the OYO Hotel on Wesley Drive, where numerous law enforcement vehicles were at the scene earlier Thursday.

Police said the men were contractors and they believe they were targeted. Fernandes learned they were doing some kind of renovation work at the hotel and had just arrived at the job site.

Their identities have not been released.

Fernandes talked to witnesses who saw the whole thing. They did not want to be identified since the shooters are still on the loose.

"I was sleeping and I heard like three gunshots," one guest at the motel said.

"We came outside, and that's when we saw the one guy who passed away now," a woman at the scene said. "He was on the floor, but he looked like he was still breathing."

She said the other contractor was shot in the arm and he was begging people to help him.

"It made me upset to see him screaming for help and bleeding," she said. "It's terrible when somebody just dies. It's sad to see people laying on the floor and they're not breathing and lifeless."

Another witness said he tried to help the victim who was still alive and saw the getaway car.

"I started to look out the window and I see a vehicle taking off," he said. "It was like an SUV."

Fernandes saw one of the contractor's tool bags on the ground right next to where police marked evidence from the shooting.

One person at the scene said the contractors were from Florida. Fernandes saw a car with Florida plates being towed from the scene.

Police said they should have a better idea of who the gunmen are after reviewing surveillance video.
