Crews give sneak peek of Mercedes-Benz Stadium

ATLANTA — We are just 86 days away until the Atlanta Falcons take the field in their new home: Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Crews have been working around the clock to make sure the stadium is complete in time for the new season.

The Falcons said the stadium will make a statement and it starts out front with a stainless steel falcon that is 40 feet high and has a wingspan of 70 feet.

The team says fans will be even more'impressed once they get inside.

"It's really gratifying. This is going to be a fantastic building for Atlanta. It's a noisy building, too," Falcons senior vice president Mike Egan told Channel 2’s Berndt Petersen as they walked through the stadium Thursday.

Egan said the retractable roof will soon be tested. The 71,000 seats are being installed and the construction of over a dozen beer gardens is nearly complete.

"Game 1, brand new. Game 3, still brand new. Season 5? I'm looking for opportunities to find different places to hang out with my friends and family. This is one of those areas," Mike Gomes, with the Falcons Fan Experience told Petersen.

And out front, a symbol like no other. A 35-ton stainless steel falcon snatching a huge bronze football.

The artist who built it brought it over from Hungary.

"This is very important when he was creating the bird to capture the moment when he grabs the prey," an interpreter for artist Gabor Miklos Szoke told Petersen.

Stadium officials said they will sprint to the finish line to make sure the stadium is done for the first game.

“We will complete this building. 2,000 workers a day around the clock can do amazing things, and we'll get it done," Egan told Petersen.

The team said all the seats will be in by the end of this month. The turf will be installed by the end of next month.
