CORONAVIRUS IN GEORGIA: Virtual graduation ceremonies continue this weekend

  • The state’s number of confirmed COVID-19 cases is up to 42,242 and 1,822 deaths as of 7 p.m Saturday. The Georgia Department of Public Health says it will update its website with new data at 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
  • A local nonprofit is partnering with Atlanta firefighters to hand out free masks in the community.
  • Hundreds arrived at a pop-up farmer’s market held in Cobb County Saturday morning. The event is part of a series of pop-up markets to help struggling farms.
  • The city of Tucker reopened both of its public pools on Saturday. Officials plan to implement new procedures intended to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. To visit Kelley Cofer Park pool or Smoke Rise Bath and Racquet Club, residents must register online for a specific 2 ½-hour period each day. The city of Milton is also reopening its pool.
  • This weekend, several school districts will continue to host virtual graduations. This includes Gwinnett County, the state’s largest school district.
  • Some metro churches may be preparing to reopen this weekend. President Donald Trump deemed churches and other houses of worship “essential" and called on governors to allow them to reopen.
  • Some Georgia national parks and historic sites will experience temporary closures to manage crowds this Memorial Day weekend. Check GaStateParks.org/Alerts for live updates.
