New video shows moments before shootout that left suspect dead, police officer injured

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Dramatic new video shows the moments leading up to a shootout between Cobb County police and a suspect that left the suspect dead and an officer injured.

The incident happened Thursday night near the Chattahoochee Chase condos. Police shot and killed 37-year-old Martin Humberto Sanchez Fregoso after he carjacked a driver and shot at police.

Channel 2′s Justin Wilfon talked to a neighbor, who gave him video of the shootout.

Chris O’Cleary said it all happened right near her condo.

"He ran right through my side yard and when he was running you could hear the gun discharge, which seemed like an accident," O'Clearly said.

Another neighbor gave Wilfon video from her home surveillance camera of the moments leading up to the shootout. One video appears to show the suspect in the upper left corner of the screen running with a rifle.

Another video shows Cobb police officers with guns drawn closing in on Fregoso.

“Police officers were pleading with the gentleman to come out with his hands up, which unfortunately he refused to do so,” O’Cleary said. “He paid the ultimate price for that.”

Neighbors said he fired at officers again from behind a dumpster. One of the shots grazed an officers head. That officer was released from the hospital and is now recovering at home.

The GBI said the officers returned fire, shooting and killing Fregoso.

“It was really surprising, given we don’t have much crime around here,” O’Cleary said.
